Kune Kune hogs are a charming and unique breed of pig originating from New Zealand, although they are believed to have been brought there by Polynesian seafarers. Here are some interesting facts about them:
Appearance: Kune Kunes are relatively small pigs, known for their round bodies and short, wide snouts. They have a distinctive friendly appearance with a calm demeanor. Their coat can come in various colors including black, white, ginger, and sometimes spotted or piebald.
Temperament: These pigs are known for being very sociable and docile, which makes them popular not only for farming but also as pets. They enjoy human company and can even learn to respond to their names.
Use: Historically, Kune Kunes were used by Maori people for their meat, but today they are also kept for their lard, which is said to be of high quality. Their meat is considered very tasty, with a higher fat content which contributes to flavor and tenderness.
Breeding: Kune Kunes are prolific breeders. A sow can have two litters a year, with each litter ranging from 2 to 10 piglets, though 4-6 is more common. They are good mothers, which makes them easier to breed compared to some other livestock.
Conservation: At one point, the breed was considered endangered, but thanks to efforts by enthusiasts and conservationists, their numbers have rebounded. They're now appreciated worldwide for their multiple uses and friendly nature.

Our Kune Kune hogs are nurtured with a diet that meticulously balances nature and nutrition:
Primary Diet: Their staple food consists of lush, pasture-raised grass and premium-quality hay, which aligns perfectly with their natural foraging instincts.
Supplemental Nutrition: To complement their grazing, we provide a specially formulated, 100% Certified Organic grain mix. This blend is tailored specifically to meet the nutritional needs of the Kune Kune breed, enhancing their health and flavor profile.
Breed-Specific Advantages: Kune Kune pigs are known for their slow metabolism, which not only contributes to their docile nature but also makes them exceptionally efficient at converting grass into high-quality meat. This characteristic makes them particularly well-suited for pasture-based systems, reducing the need for extensive grain supplementation and promoting a sustainable farming approach.
Organic Certification: All our feeding practices adhere to strict organic standards, ensuring no GMOs, synthetic pesticides, or chemical fertilizers contaminate their diet, thereby promoting health, well-being, and environmental sustainability.
Environmental and Ethical Commitment: By focusing on grass and hay, we minimize our environmental footprint, supporting a system where animals live in harmony with the land, enhancing soil health and biodiversity.
This approach not only elevates the quality and ethics of meat production but also celebrates the unique attributes of the Kune Kune breed, offering consumers a product that is rich in flavor, sustainable, and ethically produced.
-
Higher Nutritional Quality: Organic farming practices often lead to higher levels of nutrients in the meat. For instance, organic pork can have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart health, reducing inflammation, and supporting brain function.
Lower Exposure to Chemicals: Organic pork means the pigs are not fed with genetically modified grains, antibiotics, or synthetic pesticides. This reduces the consumer's exposure to these chemicals, which can potentially reduce health risks associated with long-term chemical ingestion.
Better Animal Welfare: Kune Kune pigs, known for their friendly and docile nature, benefit from organic farming through more humane treatment, access to outdoors, and a more natural diet. This stress-free environment can contribute to healthier meat quality.
Improved Flavor Profile: Many people report that organic pork, particularly from breeds like Kune Kune, has a richer, more nuanced flavor due to their varied diet which might include grasses, vegetables, and fruits in addition to grains.
Antioxidant Content: Pigs allowed to forage on organic land can consume a diet rich in antioxidants from plants, which might translate into higher antioxidant levels in the meat. Antioxidants are crucial for fighting oxidative stress and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
Environmental Health Benefits: While not directly a health benefit for the consumer, choosing organic products supports sustainable agricultural practices that reduce environmental pollution, which indirectly contributes to overall human health by maintaining cleaner water, air, and soil.
Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: Conventional pork often has a high omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, which can contribute to inflammation when this ratio is too high in the diet.
Free from Hormones: Organic farming standards prohibit the use of synthetic hormones for growth promotion in livestock. This ensures that the meat is free from these substances, potentially benefiting hormonal balance in consumers.
